Ezra McCandless, born Monica Ann McCandless, is a woman who gained national attention after being accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend, Alex Woodworth, in 2018. The case garnered significant media coverage due to the complex and seemingly contradictory details surrounding the events leading up to Woodworth's death.
McCandless claimed that she acted in self-defense after Woodworth allegedly attacked her during a heated argument in rural Wisconsin. However, investigators and prosecutors argued that McCandless deliberately killed Woodworth and staged the scene to make it appear as though it was self-defense.
During the trial, McCandless' defense team argued that she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative identity disorder (DID), which they claimed influenced her behavior during the altercation with Woodworth. The trial ended in a mistrial in December 2019, and McCandless was eventually found guilty of reckless homicide in February 2021.
Ezra McCandless' case has sparked discussions about mental health, self-defense, and the criminal justice system as a whole.
